Drew Brees Was Openly Critical Of Jalen Hurts’ Decision Making In Week 2 Win

The Philadelphia Eagles got the win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, 24-20. The Week 2 game was closer than Philadelphia would’ve liked, though.

Philadelphia improved to 2-0 on the season with the win over Tennessee. However, FOX announcer Drew Brees was critical of Jalen Hurts’ rushing style.

Brees criticized Hurts for sliding rather than using his physicality to get the first down on a rushing attempt.

“I was hyping up Jalen Hurts, and now, I’m gonna get on him,” Brees said. “Lower your shoulder, and go get the first down. You slide, they’re gonna mark the ball where you started the slide, not where you end the slide. So, it’s not a tush push situation. It’s not 4th-and-1. It’s 4th-and-3.”

It’s a tough situation for quarterbacks

NFL quarterbacks are often told to protect themselves above everything else, especially when running. You’ll rarely, if ever, see a quarterback criticized for sliding rather than taking a hit from a defender.

But, according to Brees, there are situations when it’s not appropriate to slide, and that was one of them for the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback.

Ultimately, Hurts was able to find the end zone a couple of plays later, so his decision-making didn’t end up costing the Eagles in that situation. But it’s clear that Brees isn’t going to be afraid to call out an NFL quarterback for his decision making when he’s in the broadcasting booth.

You like to see that from NFL announcers in today’s age, as it can be rare to see someone be so honest. Eagles fans might not agree with the criticism from Brees, but you have to at least respect that the FOX announcer was willing to go there during the Week 2 NFL regular season game.
