Dolphins elevate two pass rushers to address Chop Robinson’s absence

The Miami Dolphins have activated the most experienced, and most inexperienced pass rushers on the roster to address the absence of Chop Robinson for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Clelin Ferrell, a 2019 first-round pick, who has started 57 games in eight seasons, has been called up from the practice squad for the second straight game, and could possibly handle the bulk of the snaps lost because of Robinson’s absence, which is caused by a concussion he suffered during Wednesday’s practice.

Also activated was rookie pass rusher Max Llewellyn, a former Iowa standout the Dolphins’ selected in the seventh-round of the 2026 draft.

Llewellyn was one of the last Dolphins player released from the 53-man roster, but it seems as if Miami plans to invest playing time into the rookie, just like they have the rest of the 2026 draft class.

Josh Uche, a seven-year veteran who has started four of the 77 games he’s played, is expected fill Robinson’s role as Miami’s primary pass rusher. Zeek Biggers has worked as a six-technique defensive end, primarily playing on obvious running downs.

“He’s really good in run situations and gives us a big body out there who can set the edge, play six-technique, reduce down further inside. He gives us a lot of options,” coach Jeff Hafley said when asked about Biggers, a 2025 seventh-round pick. “But at the same time we need him inside. You can’t be at two places at once.”

Malik Herring, a newcomer the Dolphins signed two weeks ago, and Robert Beal Jr., a fourth-year veteran who hasn’t made an NFL start in the 26 games he has played, are the only other edge rusher available for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. That could force Miami’s linebackers – Willie Gay Jr., and Jordyn Brooks – into pass rushing roles out of necessity.

Also inactive for Sunday’s game is rookie offensive guard D.J. Campbell and tight end Justin Joly, cornerback Marcellas Dial Jr., receiver Jalen Tolbert, offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick and Brady Cook will serve as the emergency third quarterback.

Cornerback Jaylin Simpson, who was signed last week to address the knee injury Kyle Louis suffered, and inside linebacker Liam Anderson wil play their first game for the Dolphins on Sunday.
