Doctor accused of killing daughter seeks protection after alleged attacks in jail

The Oklahoma pediatrician accused of killing her 4-year-old daughter while on vacation and making her death look like an accidental drowning claims she is being attacked in jail — and pleaded with a judge for protection.

Neha Gupta, 37, appeared in court Wednesday as an attorney highlighted how Gupta’s safety is in jeopardy at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center — namely because she allegedly has been ambushed several times by Daisy Link, 31, who has been charged in connection with one of the alleged attacks.

Link, who made national headlines for getting pregnant while in jail, is accused of shooting to death her husband outside her Homestead residence in June 2022. Link was convicted of murder in October but was granted a new trial in February because prosecutors showed jurors photographs that were not admitted into evidence.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Zachary James said he can’t order corrections officials to keep Gupta separated from Link but urged them to stay “on top of the issue.”

Attorney Daphne Jean-Pierre, who represents Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation, said Link and Gupta are kept on separate tiers at TGK and are not allowed out of their cells at the same time.

“This is the best we can do at this time,” Jean-Pierre said.

In a document filed last week, Gupta’s attorneys, Carmen Vizcaino and Khurrum Wahid, said she is “in fear” due to Link. The attorneys pointed out how Link “physically assaulted” Gupta inside her cell on Jan. 26. Link was charged in connection to the incident, which bruised Gupta’s face.

Link was removed from Gupta’s housing unit, according to the filing, but was brought back in June. On July 17, Link approached Gupta’s cell banging at the door and yelling, “I am going to kill you,” the document says.

The filing also mentions a July 24 attack — allegedly at the hands of an associate of Link — which is being investigated by corrections officials.

Daughter’s death

In late June 2025, Gupta and her daughter, Aria Talathi, traveled from Oklahoma to South Florida on a vacation, staying in an Airbnb rental in El Portal, just north of the Miami city limits.

But at night on June 27, Gupta said she awoke to a noise and noticed Aria was no longer in bed, according to an arrest warrant. She said she found the sliding glass door open and Aria submerged in the pool.

Gupta, according to the warrant, said Aria could not swim and said she spent 10 minutes trying to save her before calling 911.

However, inconsistencies came to light as investigators probed her story.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office ruled out drowning in Aria’s autopsy as investigators did not find water in Aria’s lungs or stomach, according to the warrant. The girl also had bruises inside her cheeks and cuts in her mouth.

Those findings, the warrant states, suggested Aria died of asphyxiation and was likely smothered before being placed in the pool.

Authorities haven’t released a potential motive behind Aria’s killing nor said why Gupta decided to take an impromptu trip to Miami. But the warrant indicates Gupta was, at the time, embroiled in a divorce dispute with her ex-husband.
