Coast Guard stops boat with 97 bales of marijuana off Bahamas, service says

U.S. Coast Guard crews intercepted a boat off the Bahamas on Saturday that was hauling almost 100 bales of marijuana, the service said.

Small boat crews from the Cutter Charles Sexton, along with Royal Defense Force crews, intercepted the boat off about 80 miles southwest of Inagua, an island off the eastern tip of Cuba, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

The Coast Guard released a photo of the smuggling vessel, showing it to be a twin-engine white speedboat.

The agency estimates the value of the drugs to be $2.8 million. The combined weight of the load was 2,380 pounds, according to the Coast Guard.

The three people on the boat and the contraband were handed over to Bahamian authorities, the Coast Guard said.

“This interdiction highlights the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to combating transnational organized crime in the region,” Lt. Peter Fager, commanding officer of the Sexton, said in a statement. “Working together, we continue to disrupt illicit trafficking and protect the security and stability of our maritime borders.”
