Broward and New Jersey companies recall pork that might have listeria

Companies from Hollywood and Hoboken, New Jersey recalled 1,513 pounds of ready-to-eat pork after a sample tested positive for listeria.

Prime Line Distributors, headquartered in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport area, and Ferrarini USA imported guanciale — dry-cured pork jowl — made on May 21 by Trentino, Italy, company Bomè S.R.L..

“The problem was discovered during routine import re-inspection testing when a product sample confirmed positive for Listeria monocytogenes,” the USDA-written recall notice stated.

Prime Line imported cases with two pieces of individually vacuum-packed Prime Line Distributors, Inc., Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy, lot No. 263311US with a best by date of “05.16.27.” Prime Line also imported individually vacuum-packed Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy, with another label that has “Dok Guanciale” and the same lot number and best by date.

These went to food service businesses and retail stores in Florida.

The above also describes what Ferrarini imported, but the pork in cardboard cases were labeled “Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy” and the individually vacuum-packed pork jowl was labeled “Ferrarini Guanciale Dry-Cured Pork Jowl.”

These went to distributors and food service businesses in Florida, California, Texas, Illinois, Idaho, Michigan, New Jersey and New York.

Listeria hits about 1,250 people in the United States each year, according to the CDC, and kills 172. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to stillbirths and miscarriages. Most people will feel as if they’ve gotten the flu, including suffering from high fever and headaches.

Any consumers or businesses with these pork products should return them for a refund.
