Blue Jays Announce Plan for Trey Yesavage After Major Decision

The Toronto Blue Jays are entering the final weeks of the regular season with little room for error as they continue fighting for an American League playoff spot. Their pitching staff has dealt with several injuries throughout the season, forcing manager John Schneider to get creative with his rotation and bullpen plans. Toronto also entered Friday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers just two games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL wild card spot.

Trey Yesavage has been one of the most important pieces of that pitching staff. The 23-year-old right-hander has been working his way back after undergoing surgery on his left knee following his Aug. 4 start against the Houston Astros. He made a Triple-A rehab appearance Tuesday but lasted only two outs, allowing two runs on 34 pitches. The Blue Jays were more encouraged by how his knee responded physically than by the results.

Toronto has now made its plan for Yesavage. Schneider said the right-hander is scheduled to start Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, with the Blue Jays expecting him to throw approximately 45 to 50 pitches over three innings. Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling reported that, in an ideal scenario, Spencer Miles will be available to follow Yesavage as the club manages his workload in his first MLB appearance since the injury.

The Blue Jays will also use Sunday to manage their pitching staff differently. Toronto is planning a bullpen day built around Spencer Arrighetti, giving the club another way to cover the innings before Yesavage takes the mound Monday. Arrighetti has already been used in a bulk role since joining Toronto after being acquired from the Houston Astros.

Yesavage’s return comes at a crucial point for Toronto. He posted a 3.65 ERA across 18 starts before the knee injury and could provide another option for a pitching staff that has had to navigate injuries to multiple starters. The Blue Jays will face the Rangers on Sunday before traveling to Baltimore for Monday’s series opener against the Orioles.
