A scuba diver in the Florida Keys dies after a rescue, sheriff’s office says

A Michigan man died at a Florida Keys hospital after being found unconscious in the ocean while scuba diving Monday morning, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Stephen Matheny, 64, who is from West Bloomfield Township, was diving off the Middle Keys city of Marathon around 11:20 a.m. when he became unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.

People who pulled him onto a boat immediately began CPR, and a U.S. Coast Guard crew rushed him to shore. Paramedics took him to Fisherman’s Hospital in Marathon, where he died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives don’t suspect foul play, and his cause of death is pending an autopsy, sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt said.
