Florida golf cart fire spreads to home in Hobe Sound

HOBE SOUND – Residents and their cat are safe after a golf cart caught fire and spread to a nearby home on Sept. 19.

The fire started just after 7 p.m. near the 8100 block of S.E. Eagle Avenue in Hobe Sound. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and isolated the fire to the garage, porch and side of the home, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.

One patient reported minor injuries and smoke inhalation but refused being taken to a hospital for treatment, the fire department stated on its Facebook page.

Residents were able to return to their home. Their cat had been missing, but firefighters found it safe inside the house, according to Martin County Fire Rescue. The State Fire Marshal’s office has been notified and will investigate the cause of the fire.

Batteries causing fires in golf carts and yard equipment have steadily risen in recent years. Golf cart battery fires can occur when overcharged or physical damage causes electrical shorts. People should use caution when charging them overnight or when being charged unattended.
