Body camera footage shows Miami-Dade deputy fatally shooting armed teen

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage of a deputy fatally shooting an armed 17-year-old while serving a warrant at a Miami Beach apartment two months ago.

Deputies were investigating Durrel Young, 17, and Valentino Berry, 18, for gun-related offenses and obtained a search warrant for their Miami Beach apartment, according to a MDSO video that was released on Tuesday. During the early morning of July 24, Special Response Team members served the warrant at 785 81st St.

Body camera footage shows deputies walk through the apartment building’s open front door, climb up two flights of stairs and ram an apartment door open. They announce they were serving a search warrant.

“Let me see your hands,” one of the deputies said. “Hands, hands, hands, hands.”

A woman inside the apartment comes out of one of the rooms, complying with officers, according to the video. At the same time, Young, who is armed, swings open his bedroom door. One of the deputies has a clear view of Young and fires his gun around three times.

“Let me see your f—ing hands,” one deputy screams, as Young is on the ground. “Don’t f—ing move.”

The footage shows the deputy, who was not identified, shoot Young seconds after entering the apartment. Young falls to the ground in a doorway. He died in the apartment, and investigators found his firearm next to his right leg.

Deputies took Berry into custody during the raid. Both teenagers had extensive criminal records and were known gang members, Detective Angel Rodriguez, a sheriff’s office spokesman, previously told the Miami Herald. The warrant was for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

No deputies or uninvolved community members were injured.

“While a thorough investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still underway, releasing this footage ensures everyone sees the sequence of events as they unfolded,” Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement. “Regardless of the outcome, my commitment is clear, to be transparent with our community, to hold ourselves to the highest standards, and to continue working every day to earn and maintain your trust.”
