Police dog who escaped from a scene in Miami Gardens has been found

Miami Gardens police found their missing K-9 who disappeared last week after running from a patrol vehicle and getting hit by a car, according to the department.

The Miami Gardens Police Department said in a Facebook post that Gael “is SAFE! What started as a search quickly became a true community effort, and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who stepped up to help bring him home.”

K-9 Gael disappeared the evening of Sept. 7 after officers responded to a business alarm in the 200 block of Northwest 195th Street, Miami Gardens police said. When one of the officers opened the rear door of her patrol vehicle, Gael ran across Northwest Second Avenue, which is 441 in that part of Miami-Dade County.

Gael didn’t respond to commands, and surveillance footage from the area showed the police dog was hit by a vehicle before running east. A spokesperson for Miami Gardens Police Department didn’t respond to requests for additional information about how Gael was located.

Thankfully, “Gael is back where he belongs,” the statement said, adding “this is what community looks like.”
