St. Kitts Prime Minister Terrance Drew is in Miami amid medical scare

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew is in South Florida following a health scare over the weekend.

Drew confirmed his whereabouts in a video message, telling citizens of his eastern Caribbean island-nation that he and his wife traveled to the Miami-area “on the advice of medical specialists in St. Kitts and Nevis as well as specialists in Martinique so that further investigations” could be carried out.

“At this stage there is nothing alarming to report,” he said. “But the doctors are continuing their investigations.”

On Sunday, Drew, a physician who studied in Cuba, experienced persistent nausea that soon turned into episodes of vomiting. He also noticed a distinct pain on the left side of his neck accompanied by a mild headache and dizziness, he said.

“As the day progressed I began feeling unsteady on my feet, and had difficulty with my balance and walking,” said Drew. “I understood that these were symptoms that should not be ignored.”

Drew was admitted to the Joseph N. France General Hospital in St. Kitts for observation and clinical evaluation. It was later recommended that he be transported abroad for specialized observation and precautionary monitoring. In his message, Drew thanked a number of officials and foreign governments, including the U.S. embassy, that worked quickly to get him to the U.S. amid a storm system that created delays.

“This experience has been a wake-up call for me,” he said. “Health matters. We must listen when our bodies speak to us.”
