An Uber driver vanished with 400 cinnamon rolls. Border Patrol was involved

An Uber driver on the way to deliver nearly 400 cinnamon rolls to a farmer’s market in Hollywood last week was stopped and detained by Customs and Border Protection before he or the baked goods could make it to their destination.

What followed was days of confusion over the missing driver and rolls.

Julie Pierre, the 21-year-old owner of Roll and Dough, which operates out of a commissary kitchen in Sunrise, took to social media after the rolls went missing, initially believing they had been stolen.

“The order never reached its destination, we could not contact the carrier, and no one-including Uber-could tell us what had happened. As a 21-year-old running a small business on my own, I was scared, overwhelmed, and trying to recover days of work and thousands of dollars in products,” Pierre wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday.

Border Patrol agents stopped a silver Kia Carnival around 8:50 a.m. Aug. 22 on southbound Interstate 95 near Sheridan Street after a records check showed the “registered owner was identified as an alien without legal immigration status,” a CBP spokesperson wrote in a statement to the Miami Herald on Friday.

CBP said the driver was identified as Ivan Dario Rico Molano, a citizen of Colombia, who “admitted to being in the United States without legal authorization.”

Molano was taken to the Dania Beach Border Patrol Station for processing.

Records show Molano entered the United States legally in May 2021, but remained beyond his authorized period of stay, according to the CBP spokesperson.

Pierre later said the detention occurred while Molano was completing the Uber delivery and before Roll and Dough filed a police report.

“I want to make one thing completely clear: I do not support ICE or any policy that separates people from their homes and families,” she wrote. “While completing our Uber delivery, Ivan took a wrong turn near the airport entrance to I-595 and was detained by immigration authorities in the Hollywood–Fort Lauderdale area.”

Pierre said Uber instructed the business to file a police report, which she did without knowing Molano had been detained.

The situation became clearer Thursday after detectives with the Sunrise Police Department located a member of Molano’s family, Pierre wrote. The family member had retrieved Molano’s vehicle and found the five large crates of cinnamon rolls inside. She apologized for accusing him of stealing.

The family member then delivered the crates to the police station, allowing Roll and Dough to recover the cinnamon rolls five days after the failed delivery. The stale cinnamon rolls had to be thrown out.

“We are deeply sorry for what Ivan and his loved ones are currently experiencing,”Pierre wrote

Pierre has started a GoFundMe page to support her business and to specifically have “reliable business transportation for our bakery space,” she wrote on the fundraising page. She has also stated that she hoped to connect with Molano’s family’s and give a portion of the funds to help them through his detainment.

“My heart remains with Ivan and his family. If this situation has moved or angered you, please turn those feelings into meaningful action: speak out, support affected families, and vote,” Pierre wrote on Instagram.
