Diddy’s ex, Yung Miami, talks mental health struggles: ‘It was a lot’

Yung Miami has a summer hit on her hands.

“Spend Dat” debuted at No. 66 on the Billboard 100 in June, peaked at No. 17 and continues to reign the chart that tracks the most popular tunes. As of Wednesday, the club fave was sitting pretty at the No. 27 spot.

The infectious single is the Miami native’s best performing solo work, surpassing 2021’s “Rap Freaks.”

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows getting to this point, though, the artist revealed on the Aug. 13 “Way Up with Angela Yee” podcast.

Yung, born Caresha Brownlee, had a bout with the blues after a series of unfortunate events came her way. The goal is to put all her personal and professional struggles in an upcoming documentary.

“I plan on just letting people really know, you know, what it took me to get here, ‘cause it took a lot,” she said. “That’s why I’m like, ‘OK, yes, I’m here. I’m positive. I’m happy.’ Because I wasn’t always happy and this wasn’t always what it seems.”

The Opa-locka native said music was a form of mental-health therapy and helped her get through it.

“I had to keep working,” Yung said. “When you have a lot of time to think, that’s when you get pulled into that deep depression.”

A few things were playing on her mind in the last two or three years, including parting ways with her longtime City Girls collaborator JT (Jatavia Johnson). Add to that, Yung received backlash for not publicly speaking out against her ex-boyfriend, Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is now behind bars on prostitution-related charges.

“I had to stay busy. Whenever I’d catch myself going into that depression, I’m like, ‘Book me a studio.’ Because I’d rather go have these emotions in the studio,” said the mother of two. “I’m around people, I’m doing something I love: music. But I ain’t gonna lie, there was some days where I was just laying in the bed crying. … It was a lot.”
