Man shot and killed near an elementary school in Homestead, police say

A man was shot and killed near a Homestead elementary school on Tuesday morning, according to police.

Officers responded to the area of Southwest Sixth Avenue after reports of a shooting near Laura C. Saunders Elementary School, and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A Miami-Dade County Schools spokesperson told the Miami Herald that the school was unaffected and no lockdown was put in place.

Officers secured the scene and gave the man medical assistance until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived, but he died at the scene, police say.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau has taken over the investigation.
