Miami Beach drops the price of parking to lure visitors during a slow stretch

Is the cost of parking keeping you away from South Beach?

During one of the slowest periods of the year, starting with the August business doldrums and stretching to Halloween, the city is trying to lure visitors by dropping the price of parking.

So if you’ve been thinking about heading to Miami Spice, Miami Spa Months or just inhaling the salty air on Ocean Drive, you’ll save some money if you drive and park.

Parking in a Miami Beach garage usually runs $2 an hour, and on-street parking $3 to $4 per hour. But the city has lowered all municipal garage, lot and street parking to $1 per hour.

Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez said this initiative “helps us welcome more visitors while supporting the small businesses that anchor our community.”

“We’re bringing back this promotion by popular demand to encourage people to come earlier, stay longer, support local businesses and enjoy everything Miami Beach has to offer as we gear up for peak season,” Fernandez said.

The only thing you’ll need to get the discount: the ParkMobile app.

The promotion runs from August through Oct. 31.

“We invite our neighbors throughout Miami-Dade County and beyond to experience everything that Miami Beach has to offer with our lowest parking rates of the year,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Monica Matteo-Salinas, an advocate for the discounted parking rates.

Drivers must pay by phone using the app to get the discounted rate. After a driver enters the parking space’s zone number, a promo code will appear in the pop-up banner in the app.

After entering the promo code, drivers can receive up to three hours per parking session, costing $1 per hour. Drivers can use up to 45 discounted hours total until the promotion ends.

Here are some of the more popular places to park in South Beach:

▪ 3 Washington Ave: A short walk to South Pointe and Nikki Beach, but fills up fast.

▪ 200 Seventh St.: About one or two blocks from sandy shores with over 600 spaces.

▪ 1301 Collins Ave.: An abundance of parking spots with electric vehicle charging spots

▪ 2101 Collins Ave.: Right off the beach and can fit over 200 cars.

City leaders think the lure of cheaper parking will allow people to discover what the city has to offer.

“Miami Beach has some of the best restaurants, spa services and shopping in the country, along with our beautiful beaches and other outstanding amenities,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “Come experience everything that makes Miami Beach one of the world’s premier destinations.”
