Traffic alert: Miami Gardens Drive lanes shut for year. See other road closings

What headaches on the road await you?

A big one in Miami-Dade County started Friday, Aug. 14, with the shutdown of lanes along a stretch of busy Miami Gardens Drive. And that won’t be ending soon, with construction expected to squeeze traffic on the major road for months and months.

The inside travel lanes of Northwest 183rd Street between 12th and 14th avenues will be “continuously closed for about one year,” the Florida Department of Transportation said in a Facebook post.

The work is near Florida’s Turnpike, which passes through the corridor with no entrance or exit ramps at Miami Gardens Drive. But Miami Gardens Drive is a heavily traveled corridor to and from Interstate 95 and Aventura to the east.

The construction and lane closings started at 5 a.m. Friday, and FDOT says drivers should “allow extra time when traveling through the area.”

To avoid the stretch, alternates are Ives Dairy Road or Hallandale Beach Boulevard to the north and 167th Street to the South.
