Migrant boat with about 10 people arrives at Key West state park, police say

A migrant boat carrying about 10 people arrived at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park Thursday morning, police said.

The green, wooden vessel made landfall around 9 a.m., the department said in a social media post.

Migrant arrivals in the Keys, mainly from Cuba, have significantly declined since the Trump administration began cracking down on undocumented people entering the United States and enforcing its mass deportation policies. Before Trump took office, they were a weekly and sometimes daily occurrence in the island chain.

Key West police said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard helped secure the vessel and “ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

The department said the people were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Miami Herald reached out to the agency to confirm the nationalities of the people and the exact number of migrants on the boat but did not immediately hear back.
