Brittany Brave takes Miami — again. Her comedy has taken a ‘dark’ turn

Book the babysitter. Brittany Brave is back in town, and she’s coming for you at the Miami Improv.

After a few years slugging it out post-COVID in New York City, there’s no place like home to rip on her fellow residents. Expect the unexpected on Aug. 20. Brave will no doubt be poking fun at the usual suspects — including ex-boyfriends, and basically the male species in general, as well as unfortunate folks in the front row.

The West Kendall-raised funnywoman invariably manages a few digs at the, um, mixed bag of residents. A big part of her shtick is busting on how potential suitors never have “real jobs” in Miami. “Sales associate?” Brave sniped recently. “Drug dealer! He looks like he sells edibles to kindergartners!”

Some fresh, unexpected material will pop up, too. Life threw a few curveballs at Brave since last we spoke in November, when she was raising money for her documentary “Muchacha,” which follows her wild and wacky stand-up career.

On New Year’s Day, a dear friend — fellow comic and hospitality giant Danny Benavente (Dead Flamingo) — unexpectedly died at age 42.

Three months later, as Brave’s father Tony faced progressing Parkinson’s, her mother Karen was diagnosed with lung cancer. The couple, both 72, have been married 51 years.

“This was the worst year of my life, hands down,” Brave told the Miami Herald. “It literally has to get better.”

Until that happens, Brave will do what she always does: Find the funny.

“Oh, it’s all going in my act,” says the 35-year-old New Jersey native. “I already told my parents: ‘I’m an only child, and you’re putting me through it, so thanks for giving me stuff to talk about!’”

How can one make light of illness and death? Tragedy plus time won’t work in this instance.

“I don’t think anyone who knows me is shocked when I tell a dark joke,” said the Felix Varela High alum. “When you’re a comedian you’re always processing everything, good and bad. There’s no sensitivity at all.”

Likely to come up in Brave’s Thursday night show is her ironically pleasant experience at Baptist Hospital, where her mother is being treated near the family’s home.

“The cancer team is amazing, and since I’m not dating at all these days, I’m attracted to every nurse, doctor and technician who comes into the room,” Brave said. “This would be a new type of partner for me: Someone who has both a job and empathy.”

And if you’re familiar with Brave, you’d know she can’t not be an open book. It comes with the territory and job description.

“I think you’re a bad comedian if you don’t tell the truth — that’s our job,” the University of Florida grad said. “It would be weird and fraudulent and crappy not to address the things happening in your life.”
