A freight train struck and killed a person in Hollywood early Monday morning in what investigators believe to be a suicide, police said.

The freight train involved in the crash shut down the crossings at Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Pembroke Road for hours on the first day of school in Broward County starting around 4 a.m., according to traffic reports.

The incident happened around 3:40 a.m. at South 21st Avenue and Rodman Street in Hollywood, according to police.

The corridor is just west of U.S. 1 and serves freight trains as well as the Brightline passenger train. Tri-Rail, which runs on tracks to the west along the Interstate 95 corridor, wasn’t affected.

The halted train began moving north again around 6:30 a.m. Monday.
