There’s change at the Alligator Alley tollbooth. And not the kind you pay to cross the road.

The 80-mile portion of Interstate 75 that runs between Broward and Collier counties has gone cashless as of the week of Aug. 3. That means only SunPass, E-ZPass or toll-by-plate for your $3.18 trip to travel across the state.

Without a transponder, a vehicle’s registered owner will see a bill in the mail.

Westbound drivers will continue to be charged on the Broward side, eastbound drivers on the Naples side.

“Cash is no longer accepted at the toll plazas, helping keep traffic moving efficiently across South Florida,” SunPass said in announcing the change.

The Weston-to-Naples route, built for $17 million in the late 1960s as a two-lane toll road, was originally called Everglades Parkway. The roadway that connects South Florida with Southwest Florida was widened to four lanes beginning in the 1980s.

The Miccosukee tribe runs a service plaza halfway across with a food court, gas station and casino.
