Racing SUV crashes near Miami Gardens Tesla dealership after police pursuit

An overnight police chase in Miramar ended with a black SUV overturning into a Tesla dealership parking lot, injuring one and hospitalizing another, authorities say. Police argue the pursuit was ended before the crash.

Around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, two vehicles were racing in the City of Miramar when an unidentified police officer tried to pull over one of the racers, said Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss during a press conference.

A police chase ensued, but sometime during the pursuit a police supervisor told the officer to end the chase because ”at that point it was just traffic,” Moss said.

The officer promptly pulled over as the SUV sped away. Sometime after, the vehicle slammed into multiple barriers, a tree, a stop sign and light pole before overturning into the parking lot of a Tesla dealership, 20850 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami Gardens police said.

At least two people were rescued from the SUV by Good Samaritans and by the Miramar police officer who started the chase, whom Moss said was the first officer on the scene as he sped over after learning of the crash.

One of the occupants of the SUV was treated by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue in the parking lot, while the other was taken to Aventura Hospital. They are in stable condition, police said.

The crash occurred in Miami Gardens, and its police department will be continuing the investigation. It is unclear if charges are being sought.

“Really is a case of an irresponsible person driving too fast, racing through city streets, and ends up losing control of his vehicle,” Chief Moss said.
