‘That guy just killed me’. Hallandale Beach stabbing leads to roommate’s arrest

A man walked about 15 yards after being violently stabbed and said “that guy just killed me,” before collapsing to the ground and later dying at a hospital, according to Hallandale Beach Police. That “guy,” who police identified as his roommate, was arrested on a murder charge and denied bond.

On Sunday, officers were called to a mobile home community on Sea Esta Lane in Hallandale Beach, where they found a man “bleeding profusely” from a large wound near his armpit, according to the arrest affidavit of the alleged attacker, 27-year-old Edy Rivas Rizo.

The man was taken to Aventura Hospital, where he died at 1:48 p.m.

A witness told police that Rivas Rizo was inside one of the mobile homes. Officers saw a man looking out of the window and ordered him to come outside, which he did. He was followed out of the home by Rivas Rizo, who walked out shirtless and covered in blood.

He had a large cut on his hand, so he was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.

Police say surveillance footage from 317 Sea Esta Lane shows Rivas Rizo chasing the man around 1:11 p.m. while holding a “machete-style knife,” according to the arrest affidavit.

Rivas Rizo caught up to the victim and slashed him, “causing a large amount of blood to spray on the street,” the affidavit states.

The two then struggled on the ground before two witnesses were able to separate them, with one of them taking the knife away, police say.

Rivas Rizo is then seen walking back to the front door of 312 Sea Esta Lane. The victim later collapsed; a witness called 911.

In an interview with police, a witness said he lived with Rivas Rizo and the man in the same mobile home, though he only knew Rivas Rizo by his first name, Edy. He said the victim lived in an efficiency within the mobile home, but he did not know him personally.

The witness said he was asleep when he heard a commotion outside. When he went outside to see what was happening, he saw Rivas Rizo chasing the victim.

He told investigators he did not see Rivas Rizo strike the man with the knife and did not remember taking the knife into his possession. After reviewing the surveillance footage, however, he acknowledged that he did take the knife, though he still could not remember doing so. He also acknowledged bringing the knife back inside the mobile home but said he did not remember where he put it.

Police later obtained a search warrant for the mobile home and conducted a search of the property. Investigators found a machete-style knife in a storage area behind the home.

According to the affidavit, the blade was wedged between two doors that were propped up alongside several pieces of junk. The handle was visible, and investigators observed blood on and around the machete, including on the blade.

After being advised of his Miranda rights, Rivas Rizo agreed to speak with investigators.

According to the affidavit, Rivas Rizo told detectives he had been sitting outside his home drinking beer with two men he did not know when the victim came out of his room and punched him in the right eye. He claimed the victim was holding a knife and threatened him without any provocation, though he said he could not explain why.

Rivas Rizo said the two men separated them, after which he went inside his home and retrieved a machete because he feared for his life.

He initially told investigators that he and the victim immediately struggled over the machete and that the victim accidentally fell onto the blade, causing the fatal wound.

When detectives asked whether he had chased the victim, Rivas Rizo denied doing so.

After investigators showed him surveillance footage that allegedly captured him chasing the victim and striking him with the machete, Rivas Rizo admitted to chasing him but claimed he intended to hit the victim with the flat side of the blade, not the sharp edge.

Rivas Rizo is jailed at the Broward County Main Jail.
