Man who walked onto U.S. 1 fought Florida Keys deputy who saved him, MCSO says

A Florida Keys man crashed his Jeep SUV Thursday night, then walked into traffic on U.S. 1 before fighting the deputy who pulled him to safety, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Avery Travis Quiggle, 18, of Big Pine Key, crashed and rolled over the Jeep at mile marker 19 around 9 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

He was the only one in the vehicle. When paramedics arrived, he refused medical treatment and was acting erratically and yelling profanities about his Jeep being damaged, sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt said.

He then walked onto the highway, but a deputy pulled him out of the way of passing traffic, Linhardt said. Instead of being grateful, Quiggle balled his fist, continued to yell and fought with the deputy before being arrested, Linhardt said.

On Friday, Quiggle was being held in the sheriff’s office main jail on Stock Island awaiting bond on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a DUI test after his license was suspended.
