Miami-Dade Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez confirmed the incident Monday in what he described as an “important message” to the community, saying those involved allegedly used concealed electronic devices while taking the test.

“A driver license is not a right. It is a privilege that must be earned honestly and responsibly,” Fernandez wrote on his X account.

Concealed electronic devices and unauthorized outside assistance

Fernandez said multiple individuals allegedly attempted to cheat on the Florida driver license knowledge exam at a Miami-Dade Tax Collector office, where they were caught using concealed electronic devices.

“The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office recently stopped multiple individuals who attempted to cheat during the Florida driver license knowledge exam using concealed electronic devices and unauthorized outside assistance”, Fernandez said.

He did not specify how many people were involved but said they entered the office carrying hidden microphones and recording equipment to receive unauthorized assistance during the test.

“Their actions were deliberate, dishonest and a direct attack on the integrity of Florida’s driver licensing process”, Fernandez said.

He also warned that “fraud will not be tolerated at any Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Office or at any authorized third-party testing location, commonly known as a driving school”.

Consequences of cheating on the driver license exam

“Anyone who attempts to cheat, present fraudulent documents, or compromise the integrity of the testing process will be reported to the appropriate authorities and held accountable”, Fernandez warned on X.

According to Fernandez, the vigilance, training and quick response of office staff allowed officials to detect the concealed devices and immediately stop the alleged cheating attempts.

He also said cheating on driver license exams may result in the denial, suspension or loss of eligibility to obtain a Florida driver license or state identification card.

Florida began requiring all written knowledge and road tests for driver licenses to be administered only in English on Feb. 6, ending access to written exams in other languages.

The change has raised concerns among many immigrants, some of whom say it has made obtaining a Florida driver license more difficult and increased the cost of preparing for the exam.
