As of Monday, June 22, gas prices dropped by double digits across Florida. Even the state’s most expensive places to pump, Palm Beach County and the Keys, are now below $4 a gallon.

The average Miami-area price is 78 cents a gallon lower per gallon than a month ago but 61 cents higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy, a national fuel monitoring service that surveys nearly 1,700 stations in South Florida

Will the pattern continue for summer car trips and Fourth of July travel?

“Florida’s state average is now the lowest since early March,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Lower gas prices come at an ideal time for summer travel and offer some financial relief for drivers. Still, the outlook remains uncertain. Developments involving the Strait of Hormuz will continue to influence whether prices rise or fall.”

North Florida is the cheapest to pump in Florida while the Keys, Naples and Palm Beach County are the most expensive areas to buy gas, according to AAA.

What the experts are saying

▪ Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy:

“Average gasoline prices declined in nearly every state over the last week, while all 50 states saw average diesel prices move lower. However, the outlook is far from settled. New uncertainty has emerged after Iran suggested the Strait of Hormuz was closed, along with fresh warnings that the U.S. could again strike Iran, developments that could push oil prices higher in the days ahead. Despite this, gasoline prices aren’t yet at significant risk of a spike, as some vessels have continued to move through the Strait. Still, should the situation worsen or escalate further, motorists could see that risk change quickly.”
