On Friday, a Miami Gardens man walked out of jail, where he’d just spent the last three days after being arrested for leading cops on a high speed chase down U.S. 1.

His next move was a familiar one, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said, and it landed him behind bars once again.

Jefry Chaucanes Vasquez, 23, was initially arrested Tuesday for allegedly fleeing from deputies on U.S. 1 while reaching speeds of 125 mph, the office said. He is facing charges of driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, reckless driving and excessive speeding.

He bonded out of jail on Friday. Deputies said the newly freed man only made it to the parking lot before committing another crime. This time, they said, he stole a Ford SUV from the Plantation Key Courthouse parking lot — before once again fleeing from authorities along U.S. 1.

The Florida Highway Patrol tried to stop the Ford SUV around 5 p.m. Friday for reckless driving, but Chaucanes Vasquez fled near Mile Marker 83, the sheriff’s office said. They stopped him near Mile Marker 61, arrested him and took him to jail for the second time in less than a week.

Prior to stealing the Ford, Chaucanes Vasquez is accused of burglarizing another vehicle and stealing an iPhone charger, the sheriff’s office said.

The Sheriff’s Office charged Chaucanes Vasquez with burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and theft while the Florida Highway Patrol charged him “with a litany of crimes” including grand theft of a motor vehicle and fleeing police with disregard for safety to persons or property.

Chaucanes Vasquez was being held Sunday on a $1 million bond in connection with Friday’s incident, jail records show. He didn’t have an attorney listed yet.
