Tallest dorm in state will rise 17 stories, become FIU campus ‘crown jewel’

Florida International University is building what will become the tallest on-campus residence hall in Florida’s State University System, a 17-story tower that one university official calls the “crown jewel of campus.”

The dorm and four other construction projects underway at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus in West Miami-Dade — a new medical center, a worship center, a residential food hall and a museum called CasaCuba — are part of FIU’s ambitious plan to become a top 30 public university by 2030 while offering more space for students, faculty and researchers.

The centerpiece is the new which will pay homage to the university’s early history when it opens in fall 2028.

Here’s what to know about the new tower:

Memories of the mascot

Sunblazer Hall will carry FIU’s original school nickname. The mascot was a fuzzy yellow monster with a tough guy attitude, topped with a sun-like head. FIU first opened to students in 1972, but the character, called Son of a Blazer, was not introduced until 1985 as the university launched its first athletic teams.

FIU retired the Sunblazers nickname and mascot in 1987, paving way for the Golden Panthers and a mascot later known as Roary. The athletic teams dropped “Golden” in 2010 and became known simply as the Panthers.

But the Sunblazer mascot, designed by art student Jamee Houk, has made a comeback in recent years. Houk won $100 in a university contest for her unusual spunky character, which has a tough-guy body under his sun flare for a head.

Beginning in 2017, students started a movement to bring back the original mascot. Sunblazer-themed merchandise and occasional campus appearances have helped keep the character’s memory alive, while some students and fans have embraced the name as a connection to FIU’s early years.

Breakdown of the new FIU dorm

The new 17-story dorm will feature a curved glass exterior and a crescent-shaped layout that wraps around the back of the Management and Advanced Research Center and extends toward the Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum.

“It will be the crown jewel of campus,” said FIU Chief Financial Officer David Snider.

Designed by Stratus, an engineering, architecture and consulting firm, in partnership with general contractor Moss Construction, the residence hall will provide 1,174 beds and a ground-level video wall.

The projects are part of FIU’s Experience Impact: 2030 strategic plan, which focuses on student success, research and innovation.

“At FIU, our vision is clear and our future is bold,” FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez said. “The construction projects transforming our campus are designed to strengthen strategic research, innovation and student success.”

The new dorm will be financed through bonds and a $37.4 million contribution from the university and private donations.

Other projects will expand FIU’s research capacity. The second phase of the Innovation Building, for example, will provide additional laboratory space to meet growing demand and support the recruitment of top faculty.

FIU is also expanding its housing options beyond the main campus.

A privately owned, 21-story student housing development planned across the street in Sweetwater is expected to provide 820 beds when it opens in fall 2028.

And a planned 29-story off-campus student housing tower approved in Sweetwater will provide about 400 units.
