Detectives with the sheriff’s office’s Organized Crime Bureau, Vice and Intelligence Squad and Environmental Crimes Unit served a warrant on the five-acre property in the 22100 block of Southwest 309th Street around noon and found hundreds of roosters and other game fowl caged, missing feathers and some that were injured, according to the reports.

Detectives also found cockfighting rings, seats for spectators, score boards, vitamins, medications, syringes and “rooster agitators” — devices meant to make the fighting birds more aggressive — while searching the property, according to the arrest report.

Two men, 41-year-old Jesus Fabian Oliva, and 29-year-old Angel Ponce Maqueda, were arrested on four counts each of animal cruelty, according to jail records.

They were being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Wednesday, each on a bond of $10,000. Oliva was being held on an additional bond of $3,650 on charges of possession of a firearm while having a domestic violence injunction, willful disregard of environmental regulations and nuisances injurious to health.

Oliva told detectives he owns the property, according to his arrest report. Maqueda told detectives that he does not own the birds, but he feeds them and gives them water, the report states.

Information about either men’s legal representation was not immediately available.
