Brandon Miller’s $209M deal makes Charlotte his team
Brandon Miller agreed to a five-year, $209 million rookie-scale extension on Monday with the Charlotte Hornets, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, with the news arriving minutes before the 6 p.m. deadline.

The deal runs through the 2031-32 season and ties the 23-year-old forward to a franchise that just spent an offseason tearing up its old core.
Houston’s Amen Thompson signed a five-year, $208 million extension in September, and Newsweek noted that Miller’s number tops it by a million. ClutchPoints reported that the Franz Wagner, OG Anunoby and Thompson contracts all came up in negotiations.
Miller was reportedly looking for more than $200 million, according to Basketnews, so Charlotte landed right around his target.
Spread across five seasons, the deal works out to roughly $42 million a year, and ESPN notes he turns 24 next month, which puts the whole contract inside his prime.
Miller averaged 20.2 points and 4.9 rebounds and shot 38.3 percent from three in 65 games. The sharper number, also from ESPN, is the team’s record: Charlotte went 41-24 with him in the lineup and 3-14 without him.
The Hornets made a surprise second-half push into the play-in tournament before losing to Orlando. For a team that spent years searching for a clear lead option, that gap probably did most of the persuading.

Staying healthy is the real risk in a deal this size
Nobody questions the talent. The body is the open question. ClutchPoints noted that Miller has missed roughly a third of Charlotte’s games since the Hornets took him second overall in 2023, and theScore pointed out that injuries held him to 27 games in his second season. He had surgery in May to address shoulder stability, but ESPN says he has fully recovered and he played in the preseason.
Charlotte is betting that 2025-26 was the norm and not the exception.
The Hornets traded LaMelo Ball to Minnesota and parted ways with Miles Bridges this offseason, and ESPN notes Miller steps into an even bigger role as a result.
Kon Knueppel, the Rookie of the Year runner-up, is the other young cornerstone, and NBA.com’s team preview lists Naz Reid as an offseason addition. In effect, the front office assembled a new group and has now paid its first member.
Wednesday’s opener is where contract starts getting judged
Charlotte opens its season Wednesday, and Miller will be asked to carry more of the scoring than he ever has. He also joins a short list of 2023 draftees who are already locked in. Marc Stein’s rundown, quoted by Basketnews, names Cason Wallace, Victor Wembanyama, Keyonte George, Brandin Podziemski and the Thompson twins as the others.
The expectations are simple: a full season, scoring at or above last year’s level, and a Hornets team that wins the games he plays. If he stays on the floor, $209 million will look sensible by spring.
If the shoulder or anything else keeps interfering, Charlotte will feel it for years.
