Man makes off with register from Miami Beach burger, Venezuelan restaurants: police

A man was arrested Monday for burglarizing businesses in Miami Beach, allegedly shattering a Venezuelan restaurant’s front door weeks after running off with a burger shop’s cash register, according to police.

On Friday morning, a masked man used a large rock to shatter a front glass door at 7TY ONE, Miami Beach police spokesman Christopher Bess said in a statement. He entered the empty Venezuelan restaurant at 1130 Normandy Drive, went behind the counter and made off with the cash register.

There was around $450 inside, plus the drawer itself was valued around $400, police said. The business estimated an extra $950 in damages to the door and electrical wiring.

Through surveillance footage, police identified 57-year-old Kevin Reilley as a suspect, police said. Investigators spotted similarities between that incident and another burglary in the area on Oct. 2.

Reilley allegedly forcibly removed Big Joe Smash Burgers’ wall-mounted lockbox at 6987 Collins Ave. He used the spare key inside to enter the restaurant before leaving with the entire cash register, an approximate loss of $800, according to an arrest affidavit.

Reilley is accused of burglary of an unoccupied structure while masked, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief and petit theft, police said. He isn’t listed in court or jail records yet.

“Protecting our businesses and holding offenders accountable are priorities for this department,” Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones said in the statement.
