Come Oct. 9, one local friend group is introducing a menu that “slaps” to Flagler Beach.

Slapperz on Second, a new casual concept centered on loaded hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches and bagels, is preparing to open with one simple mission: serve easygoing food that tastes anything but ordinary, says Liam Thoubboron, who co-owns the restaurant with business partners and friends Nicholas Michael, Aleksandr Perepechkin and Denys Kazak.

The primarily grab-and-go eatery, located next door to Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ice, borrows its playful name from the familiar compliment, “that slaps” – fitting for a restaurant striving to offer locals and beachgoers alike a quick, satisfying new option near the shore.

Who is behind Slapperz on Second?

For Thoubboron and Michael, being business partners isn’t new territory. The local real-estate investors have worked together for more than six years, Thoubboron said, as co-founders of Flagler’s SPF Homes.

Perepechkin, whom Thoubboron met through the real-estate sphere, runs a Palm Coast-based custom home-building business, Wise Choice Custom Homes, while Kazak, from Ukraine, operates Smak Euro Deli, a European deli and grocery store in Palm Coast.

With hospitality, management and business experience among them, the friends found that opening a restaurant together was unfamiliar ground – but not an improbable leap.

“I’ve always had a passion for good food. I like to cook at home, and it was something I thought eventually I would do, a restaurant concept down the line,” Thoubboron said.

When the friends first toured the space several months ago, Perepechkin was considering it as a showroom for his custom homebuilding business, Thoubboron explained. But when the landlord pointed out it was already well-equipped for a dining concept, it sparked a different idea.

“I’m a very spontaneous person – sometimes for the worst, sometimes for the better,” he laughed, noting that as the friends began to bat around ideas, a no-fuss, grab-and-go concept felt increasingly appropriate for the beach town.

“There’s really nothing around like – I miss the stuff up North, you know? Just being able to go into a deli to get something and go,” said Thoubboron, originally from New York.

“… So, that’s kind of our goal, to bring good, quick food that people can grab at a decent price point and just have fun with it and keep it simple.”

What’s on the menu at Slapperz on 2nd?

Bacon, egg and cheese lovers are in luck, as Slapperz will offer the breakfast classic served on a croissant, New York roll or bagel of choice, from plain and poppy to everything and cinnamon raisin.

“Some (bagels) are going to be made locally, and there will also be fresh sourdough bagels, which is something kind of different,” Thoubboron said, noting the restaurant plans to also offer New York bagels.

Hot dogs – Sabrett all-beef dogs, according to Slapperz’s recent menu – range from the chili dog with homemade chili, cheese and fresh onion, to the classic dog, New Yorker dirty water dog, and Chicago-style dog with mustard, onion, relish, pickles, tomato and sport peppers.

Alongside house-made tuna and chicken salad, served in a cup, on a bagel or a croissant, Slapperz’s menu features Italian sausage and peppers – sweet, hot or both – served on a fresh roll, as well as a “meatball snow cone.”

Often referred to as an “Italian ice cream cone,” the meatball creation was born in an Italian deli in the Bronx roughly two years ago and consists of Italian bread that’s hollowed out, stuffed with homemade meatballs, cheese and marinara and enjoyed ice cream cone-style.

“I can see that being a cool late-night item, you know, after a couple drinks or something like that,” Thoubboron said. “I saw it online, and then I made it at my house one night for dinner and was like, ‘Wow, I could see people going crazy for this.'”

The restaurant will showcase a half-dozen combo meals, each priced below $20 with chips and a drink included, and plans to introduce weekly specials, Thoubboron added, potentially expanding the menu with items that prove popular. Beer and wine will also be available.

What’s more, guests who visit the restaurant on opening day and provide proof that they follow its official Facebook page will receive one free coffee with any bagel order, according to a recent post by Slapperz.

With about eight indoor bar seats, Slapperz will offer limited dine-in service, as well as takeout and delivery with DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.

“Hopefully it goes well,” Thoubboron said of the upcoming opening. “… It’s been exciting just being in here and having people always walking by. The community seems to really be excited about it, so I’m excited. It’s just a matter of getting the doors open.”

Slapperz on 2nd Street is located at 209 S. Second St. in Flagler Beach. For information, call 386-569-0327 or visit facebook.com.
