Last week, officers found Jordan Nelson, 36, in the driver’s seat of a crashed Ford F-150 with the keys still in the ignition, Davie police said in an arrest affidavit. He is accused of knocking over a power line near 11200 SW 45th St.
No other drivers were involved in the Sept. 25 crash, and there were no injuries.
Nelson had a strong smell of alcohol emanating from his face, especially as he spoke, and his eyes were red and glossy, police said. He was slurring his speech and failed certain portions of a voluntary field sobriety test, according to the affidavit.
The council candidate submitted two breath samples, which were both more than double the legal limit, according to police.

Officers estimated the damage to the guardrail cost around $6,500, in addition to around $16,500 in damages to the utility pole, police said. Nelson was arrested on driving under the influence charges.
His attorney, Randall Haas, told Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami that “Jordan is humbled by this experience and takes the matter very seriously.”
“He has taken appropriate steps to address it through the proper legal process,” Haas said. “We remain optimistic about the resolution of the case, and Jordan remains focused on the issues and the message he has been conveying to his supporters throughout his campaign.”
Nelson is one of four candidates on the Nov. 3 ballot for the District 3 election, according to Davie election information.
