Ron DeSantis a victory after his administration rallied behind the longtime University of Alabama president despite attacks from conservative activists who questioned his commitment to dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The board\u2019s near-unanimous endorsement of Bell was also a stunning outcome for an acrimonious hiring process that drew scrutiny from high-ranking GOP officials all the way up to the White House.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Bell, who led Alabama\u2019s flagship university for a decade, assumed the presidency immediately under .<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>His confirmation closes one of the most turbulent presidential searches in UF history. What began as another ideological battle over DEI ultimately became a proxy fight between two of Florida\u2019s most influential Republican higher education leaders, delaying Bell\u2019s confirmation and exposing growing tensions over who controls the state\u2019s flagship university.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Political d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s candidacy unfolded under the shadow of the university\u2019s failed attempt last year to hire former University of Michigan president Santa Ono, who was rejected last year by the Board of Governors after facing the same pushback Bell encountered.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ono\u2019s rejection fundamentally changed the calculus for future presidential candidates, who would now face ideological scrutiny from conservative activists, state officials and the Board of Governors.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Within days of UF naming Bell its sole finalist in May following a closed search, <u>conservative commentators began circulating years-old statements supporting diversity initiatives<\/u> and questioned whether he would faithfully implement DeSantis\u2019 higher education agenda, which has eliminated DEI offices, restricted diversity spending and sought to reshape public universities around a more conservative vision.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In a remarkable intervention, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon <u>suggested on social media that UF should find a different president<\/u>, saying \u201cFlorida has led the fight to get discriminatory DEI out of our schools and universities. UF deserves a president who will continue to drive those reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>UF and the governor\u2019s office countered the backlash with <u>an unusually aggressive public relations campaign for Bell.<\/u> <u>Responding to McMahon on X<\/u>, the university said the education secretary was \u201ccorrect\u201d that \u201cDEI is discriminatory by design\u201d and \u201cBell stands with Secretary McMahon, the Board, and the people of Florida on this. He is ready to lead UF forward as a university defined by merit, rigor, and the pursuit of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Bell echoed that message throughout his <u>public appearances<\/u>, repeatedly noting that Alabama had dismantled its DEI office after state lawmakers prohibited such programs and pledged to continue Florida\u2019s higher education reforms if confirmed. Those assurances appeared sufficient for UF trustees, who <u>unanimously approved Bell\u2019s nomination in early June<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Boardroom beef<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>By the time Bell reached the Board of Governors, however, the ideological debate had largely given way to a different fight.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Instead of questioning Bell\u2019s views on DEI, state higher education leaders became embroiled in an increasingly public dispute over governance between Board of Governors Chairman Alan Levine and UF Board of Trustees Chairman Mori Hosseini, a prominent homebuilder, Republican donor and one of DeSantis\u2019 closest allies.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The dispute threatened to derail Bell\u2019s confirmation altogether. Levine canceled Bell\u2019s June 24 interview before the Board of Governors and argued university policies granted Hosseini broad authority over key decisions, including executive hiring and compensation, without sufficient oversight from the full board of trustees.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The move ignited <u>a week of public sparring between the two Republican power brokers<\/u>. UF trustees accused Levine of using Bell\u2019s nomination as leverage to force broader governance changes. Rather than dwelling on DEI, board members largely accepted Bell\u2019s assurances that he supported Florida\u2019s higher education reforms.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Several even praised <u>Bell\u2019s recent America 250-themed Fox News opinion column<\/u>, in which he argued DEI had devolved into an \u201cideological enforcement regime\u201d and that universities had strayed from the Founders\u2019 vision of \u201cthe righteous pursuit of truth\u201d toward \u201cpartisan activism dressed up as scholarship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Bell on Wednesday reaffirmed his support for Florida\u2019s institutional neutrality policies, which discourages university leaders from taking official positions on political issues in an effort to avoid chilling debate among students and faculty. He insisted he would not \u201cbring woke back\u201d to Florida\u2019s flagship campus, telling board members he eliminated \u2014 rather than rebranded \u2014 Alabama\u2019s diversity offices and programs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Asked about critical race theory\u2019s academic value, Bell said a university\u2019s job is to \u201cteach our students not what to think, but how to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Levine, meanwhile, focused less on ideology than governance. His questions centered on Bell\u2019s management philosophy and the importance of making hiring decisions transparently \u2014 a nod to Levine\u2019s concerns about the authority wielded by Hosseini and the university\u2019s trustees.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Several of UF\u2019s most prominent leadership positions \u2014 including the provost and the deans of the law, engineering and medical schools \u2014 have remained under interim leadership for years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Levine asked Bell what qualities he would seek in permanent hires and reminded him that, ultimately, those decisions belonged to the president.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s your decision who to hire,\u201d Levine told Bell. Bell responded that he would work \u201chard\u201d and \u201cfast\u201d to fill leadership vacancies and promised \u201ctransparent\u201d hiring processes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The state board\u2019s sole dissenting vote against Bell came from Aubrey Edge, who questioned Bell\u2019s DEI record and Alabama\u2019s academic standing. Edge pointed to U.S. News &amp; World Report college rankings, noting Alabama trails UF by a significant margin.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Bell responded that Alabama\u2019s systemwide ranking is weighed down by its satellite campuses and argued the flagship Tuscaloosa campus would fare substantially better if evaluated independently.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Most state board members expressed a desire to move past what has been one of the most unstable periods at UF in recent memory, which began with the sudden exit of then-President Ben Sasse in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Board member Nick Sinatra, a recent DeSantis appointee, urged his fellow board members to \u201cmove past\u201d the acrimony and \u201cturn the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Florida is a rocket ship.
