Mother\u2019s Day is Sunday, and one mother-daughter duo hopes you\u2019ll use some of the day to talk openly and honestly about your health.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because they are both waging battles against breast cancer. Emerly Rojas and her mother, Xiomara Guzman, received their diagnoses only five months apart. The two now support each other through their treatments.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year in April, I was feeling my breasts, and I felt a huge lump that wasn\u2019t there before,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cWhen she told me that she went for her mammogram, and that she had like a lump, I would have never thought that it was, it\u2019s like it\u2019s crazy what a coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rojas\u2019 mother has stage four breast cancer. It has metastasized. Rojas is battling stage two breast cancer. Something that came as a surprise because cancer didn\u2019t run in their family.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI still don\u2019t believe it, you know,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s been hard. But we support each other. We talk to each other every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The situation isn\u2019t easy for Guzman to talk about. But her pride in her daughter is.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s wonderful. She\u2019s the best, best, best daughter that somebody can have. She\u2019s good,\u201d Guzman said. Rojas undergoes radiation treatments at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Plantation.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Guzman is doing immunotherapy treatments. Through it all, they make sure they care for each other. \u201cMy cancer is … bad,\u201d Guzman said. \u201cBut I\u2019m doing very good, very good. She helped me in everything she can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Alejandra Perez, an oncologist at Sylvester, is treating both mother and daughter, something that she says she has done before, but not necessarily at the same time.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a big myth that patients that develop breast cancer have a family history,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that most patients that are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history, so we, I always say to my patients we are all at risk, and we all have to pay attention. Family history or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dr. Perez advises women to know their risk and know their bodies. Rojas encourages them to be their own advocates and make sure they are getting their screenings.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cGet your mammograms, do physical exams, check the breast area, check under your armpit, keep up with your appointments,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cIf you see anything make sure you reach out to your doctors.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As for what they will give each other this Mother\u2019s Day, Guzman said: \u201cI think the best gift I can give to her is my love.\u201d Rojas said: \u201cMy love, my appreciation for her and the gift of you know strength and just being there every day and checking up.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rojas herself is a mother of two children. She is working through her cancer treatments. Both women credit the love and support of their family for keeping them positive and motivated during this journey.<\/p>\n
