It is something that depends on our participation. If you don’t like something, you have to get involved and make change.”

Miami is the sixth of eight stops on the Freedom Plane National Tour, which has been transporting the documents across the country in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. After the exhibition’s stint at the Museum of Miami, the documents will travel to Dearborn, Michigan.

Jessie Kratz, the exhibition curator and National Archives historian, said the exhibition came to the Museum of Miami because the museum is able to keep the delicate documents safe while providing access to a wide audience.

“We want to have a wide representation of people and reach as many people as possible,” she said.

Walking through history

The exhibition, located right by the museum entrance, is physically small but bursting with history. The nine documents are divided into three glass cases, each one marking different moments in America’s infancy.

The first document on display is the Articles of Association from October 1774, which Kratz called “the seeds of what eventually became the Declaration of Independence.” After the Boston Tea Party, the British government cracked down on the colonies with a series of oppressive laws known as the Intolerable Acts. The Continental Congress responded with the Articles of Association, an economic boycott against England. John Adams’ signature is easy to spot on the document.

Fans of the musical “Hamilton” will be tickled to see the next three documents: small pieces of paper haphazardly cut into rectangles signed by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and his future rival Aaron Burr. The trio signed the papers swearing their allegiance to the United States of America, not King George the Third. After the horrible winter at Valley Forge, where many soldiers died from poor conditions, Congress required all officers to sign Oaths of Allegiance to boost morale, Kratz said.

“I always think that our country is founded on paperwork. These were all done in the field. This is George Washington’s oath of allegiance,” Kratz said, pointing at his signature. “It’s very different than the oath we take today as government employees or from the military, because it’s very centered on the Constitution. But there was no Constitution yet, so it’s very, very anti-George.”

Next is America’s “break-up letter and divorce is final,” Kratz joked.

While the original Declaration of Independence remains in Washington D.C., the exhibition has truly the next best thing: an exact replica commissioned by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. Unlike the original Declaration of Independence, which is so faded today that John Hancock’s iconic signature is barely legible, the engraving on display in Miami is what the document actually looked like at the time it was signed.

Read more Are you being scammed in booking a stay for the Miami World Cup? Next to the engraving is the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War in 1783 and was signed by American delegates John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay.

The last case highlights the messy and contentious process the Founding Fathers underwent to form the federal government. Drafts of the document were printed offset so delegates could take notes in the margins. The final document is the U.S. Senate’s mark-up of the Bill of Rights. Originally, there were 17 amendment. With dark splotchy ink, the Secretary of the Senate drew large Xs through four amendments, slashed through several lines and furiously wrote down edits in the margins.
