Will Florida feel it?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s advisory is in effect from noon to 6 p.m., with feels-like temperatures up to 108 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The region also was under heat advisories on Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The weather service warns that \u201chot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is already warm and steamy out there,\u201d Lissette Gonzalez, a meteorologist at Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami, said Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>South Florida felt like the 90s at 5 a.m., she said. Peak heat in South Florida is expected around 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust activated an emergency outreach plan. Before 2023, the weather service issued a heat advisory when the heat index hit 108 degrees. The goal is to spread awareness so that people protect themselves from extreme heat that leads to more than 30 deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations every year, according to county estimates.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>What is the heat index?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, according to the weather service. This is how hot it \u201cfeels like\u201d on your skin on steamy days.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>How can you prevent heat illness?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Miami-Dade County has issued several hot weather survival tips, based on U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advice, and noted who is most at risk:<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p><b>Who is most at risk of heat-related illnesses:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Older adults 65 and older, young children, people with chronic health conditions or mental illness, athletes who exercise outdoors, outdoor workers, people living unsheltered or with limited access to air conditioning, pregnant people, and pets.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p><b>What you should do:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Stay cool<\/b> by spending time in air-conditioned buildings.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Avoid<\/b> direct contact with the sun.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Reduce<\/b> physical activity and move to shaded areas.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Do outdoor activities in the cooler morning or evening hours<\/b>, and dampening your shirt or wrapping a wet scarf or bandana around your neck or forehead could also help.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Stay hydrated<\/b> and drink plenty of water or drinks with electrolytes if you\u2019re sweating. Don\u2019t wait until you\u2019re thirsty to drink more. Use sunscreen, too, to protect against skin damage.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa<b> Limit or avoid<\/b> dehydrating caffeine and alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Never leave<\/b> infants, children or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <b>Watch<\/b> for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
