FIFA, the Zurich-based international governing body of the sport, follows guidance from the weather service, which states that play must stop if lightning is detected within eight miles of a stadium.

Should lightning strike somewhere to the west or southwest, say in Hialeah and Miami Lakes, or to the south to the northern borders of Miami such as Biscayne Gardens, or north or northeast to parts of southern Hollywood or Miramar, Pembroke Pines or Hallandale Beach — all of these about eight miles away from the stadium — officials would start a 30-minute clock and clear players from the field.

Read more Heading back into orbit: Miami Sunset High graduate is spacebound again

If it’s just rain, players will soldier on. The stadium’s playing field is not covered by a roof. Athletes will get wet. So will many of you seated in uncovered sections.

Usually, once a strike is detected, players leave the field and fans must seek shelter. A mandatory 30-minute countdown begins. Each new lightning strike resets the clock’s countdown. Once 30 minutes have passed with no lightning strikes, players can warm up and fans can return to their seats.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service and match organizers convene ahead of the eight-mile rule. If lightning is detected 16 miles away from the stadium — say at the FIFA Fan Festival at Bayfront Park, Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, or along Ocean Drive on South Beach — these officials huddle and start monitoring the movement of the storm cell.

The extreme heat plan

Given Miami’s extreme temperatures in June and July during FIFA’s month-long World Cup run, the governing body and Hard Rock Stadium officials agreed earlier this week to allow fans to bring in one soft plastic, 20-ounce factory-sealed disposable water bottle into any FIFA World Cup 2026 match. But don’t bring in hard-sided, reusable water bottles. Those will be forbidden due to safety and security reasons.

“FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers and staff. Climate-related risks are assessed as part of overall tournament planning and managed in close coordination with the host cities, stadium authorities and national agencies,” FIFA said in a statement to the Miami Herald.

Also, leave your umbrellas at home. Whether for rain or to block the sun, umbrellas are a safety hazard and also block fans’ views of the matches. No change in that longstanding policy.
