Monroe County firefighters save girl trapped in Florida Keys house fire

Firefighters saved a 12-year-old girl who was trapped in a town house that caught fire in the Florida Keys Monday morning, Monroe County Fire Rescue said.

County and city of Key West firefighters, as well as Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies, responded to the Stock Island building around 9 a.m. Two families were inside the Sixth Avenue units when the fire started, said Monroe Fire Rescue spokeswoman Kristen Livengood.

As they battled the fire, first responders learned the girl was still trapped on the third floor. Firefighters were able to free her, and they took her to the Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West. Paramedics then drove her to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for further treatment.

A firefighter treating the girl at the scene told an ambulance crew over the radio that she had smoke inhalation and some injuries from the fire. Livengood said the girl is in stable condition.

The fire is under investigation by the Florida Fire Marshal, Livengood said.

“I’m proud of the swift, professional response by our firefighters and the first responders who worked together at the scene,” Monroe Fire Rescue Chief Rene Luis Colina said in a statement. “ Their coordination and immediate actions made a difference during a very difficult situation.”
