Meet the candidates for Aventura mayor. Here’s what they have to say

Aventura residents will elect a mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 3. We asked the two candidates where they stood on key issues facing the city. Here is how they responded:

AVENTURA MAYOR

Why are you running for office?

Howard S. Weinberg: Serving Aventura is my passion. I was an Aventura commissioner for eight years, and I am in my fourth year as mayor. I love working to make the City of Excellence the best place to live. In addition to being the most experienced public servant, I am the most qualified with my master’s degree in government from Georgetown and my law degree from Boston U.

Alberto Zaltzberg: I live here, raise my family here and run my business here. I got tired of complaining at the gate and doing nothing about it. So I wrote a plan first: 24 proposals on traffic, safety, HOA transparency, seniors and parks, published in full at adonait.com/propuesta before asking anyone for a vote. Aventura deserves a plan, not slogans.

What makes you the best candidate for the position you are seeking?

Howard S. Weinberg: I am the only candidate that has done the job. I have kept every promise, including no property tax increase for as long as I am the mayor, and building a new school with no tax increase — we had the groundbreaking last month. I also brought Freebee to Aventura and successfully brought Aventura $ millions in grants and appropriations.

Alberto Zaltzberg: I already do this work. As a broker and small-business owner I read budgets, HOA documents, permits and contracts every day, and that is most of what a city actually does. I also did the work before the job: 24 published proposals, an open question forum, and answers in the languages our neighbors speak at home.

What is the most pressing issue facing the community you wish to represent?

Howard S. Weinberg: Public safety is priority number one. It is part of my “quality of life” priority umbrella that includes crime prevention, low taxes/affordability, traffic mitigation, superior schools, recreational programs/upgraded parks and public transit.

Alberto Zaltzberg: The cost of staying in the home you already own. Reserves, insurance and special assessments are squeezing owners, and hardest on the retirees on a fixed income. The city does not write those bills, but it can help: clear numbers published, faster permits for the required repairs, and one place to ask questions and get an answer.
