Drivers, beware: Lanes shifting on Okeechobee Road and across Miami and Broward

If you’re driving in Northwest Miami-Dade this week, take note: Lanes along Okeechobee Road from Northwest 87th to 74th avenues in Hialeah Gardens, including access to the Palmetto Expressway, will be closed.

At least one lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day. Lanes will also be closed from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on weekends.

This project includes construction to widen the roads, construct new lanes and build a new sidewalk

The dedicated right-turn lane on Northwest South River Drive accessing the southbound Palmetto Expressway has been removed, and drivers can still make a right turn from the remaining lane.

Travel lanes on Okeechobee Road have also been shifted to allow for roadwork.

Here’s how to get around the road construction:

Westbound and eastbound lanes on Okeechobee Road from the Palmetto Expressway to east of West 18th Avenue will shift north. The ramp from Okeechobee Road to the northbound Palmetto Expressway will also shift north, and exit lanes along the northbound Palmetto Expressway off-ramp will be reduced from two to one lane.

Lanes along Northwest South River Drive will not shift, but the eastbound lane on Northwest South River Drive between Northwest 91st Terrace and Northwest 79th Avenue will be completely closed throughout the fall.

The right turn lane from northbound Northwest 79th Avenue to eastbound Okeechobee Road will be temporarily removed.

Lanes on West 18th Avenue between Okeechobee Road and West 35th Street will be shifted east and reduced from two to one lane in each direction. Starting Thursday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m., both directions of the Northwest 79th Avenue bridge between Okeechobee Road and Northwest South River Drive will be shifted east.

Detours are in place for these closures.

Drivers traveling east along Northwest River Drive approaching Northwest 79th Avenue who want to access Okeechobee Road in either direction should make a right turn on Northwest 93rd Terrace, then turn left on Northwest 82nd Avenue. Then make a left turn on Northwest 90th Street and another left on Northwest 79th Avenue. Continue past the intersection of Northwest South River Drive and Northwest 79th Avenue to access Okeechobee Road in both directions.

If drivers are traveling east on Northwest South River Drive approaching Northwest 79th Avenue and they want to continue on Northwest South River Drive or access the southbound Palmetto Expressway, another detour is in place.

Drivers should make a right on Northwest 93rd Terrace, then turn left on Northwest 82nd Avenue. Turn left again on Northwest 90th Street and make another left on Northwest 79th Avenue. Then make a right on Northwest South River Drive to continue east or access the southbound Palmetto Expressway.

Miami-Dade County

North Miami: Lanes on Northeast 135th Street from Northwest Second Avenue to Northeast 17th Avenue/Tressler Street will be closed. Eastbound lanes will close from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. when the reduced speed limits in the school zone are inactive. When the school zone is active, the lanes will close from 10:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and again from 4:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Westbound lanes will close from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the school zone is inactive. When reduced speed limits are active for the school, lanes will close from 5 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. and from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Miami: One lane on Biscayne Boulevard from Northeast 61st Street to Northeast Sixth Avenue will close in both directions from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. as needed. One lane on Biscayne Boulevard from Northeast 64th Street to Northeast Sixth Avenue will also close in either direction from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and at night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. as needed.
Miami: Lanes on Coral Way from Southwest 22nd to 17th avenues and from Southwest 12th Avenue to Brickell Avenue will close every day from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional closures can take place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights.
Downtown Miami: One or two lanes on Port Boulevard from Biscayne Boulevard to PortMiami will close from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays. One or two lanes along Biscayne Boulevard will also close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
University Park: Lanes on the bridge at Southwest Eighth Street and 109th Avenue near Florida International University will close from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. On Friday and Saturday nights, lanes will close from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Temporary lane closures may also occur daily on westbound Southwest Eighth Street between Southwest 109th and 112th avenues for crane lifting. “These closures will be short in duration, and traffic will resume immediately after each lift is completed,” the Florida Department of Transportation says on the project website. This work is involves construction of a new pedestrian bridge near campus after the previous bridge collapsed during construction in 2018, killing six people.

Broward County

Fort Lauderdale: The Northeast 48th Street Bridge will be fully closed in both directions until summer 2027. Detours will be in place throughout the duration of the closure.
Fort Lauderdale: The southbound I-95 Express Lanes and an inside lane will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday between Sunrise Boulevard and Stirling Road. The express lanes entrance at Oakland Park Boulevard and the Broward Boulevard Park and Ride will be closed, and drivers traveling south in the I-95 Express Lanes will exit at Sunrise Boulevard onto the general lanes.
Deerfield Beach: Two outside lanes in both directions of I-95 from Sample Road to Southwest 10th Street will close Sunday through Thursday for bridge construction. The first lane will close at 8 p.m. and the second at 8:30 p.m., and both lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. Lanes will return to normal on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Hollywood: The northbound I-95 Express Lanes and inside lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday as needed from Hollywood Boulevard to Sunrise Boulevard. The exit north of Stirling Road will be closed, and drivers must exit north of Hollywood Boulevard.
Davie: One lane on U.S. 441/Orange Blossom Trail from Oakes Road to Riverland Road will be continuously closed as needed every day. Northbound U.S. 441 from the I-595 entrance ramp to the South Fork New River Canal will be permanently reduced from three to two lanes, and Northwest 34th Avenue may be closed in one direction as well. Northbound Northwest 34th Avenue will detour via Northwest 9th Street and U.S. 441 and southbound Northwest 34th Avenue will detour via U.S. 441, Northwest Eighth Street and Northwest Eighth Place. Shoulder closures are also permitted during this time to allow for roadway repaving and widening and pedestrian enhancements such as the construction of a new path and upgraded signs and markings. The work is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
