How a roach put a Broward Winn-Dixie on the verge of serious consequences

There’s no good time for a cockroach to scurry across a supermarket floor. That it happened during a state inspection puts a Hallandale Beach Winn-Dixie at risk of being sidelined briefly.

During Wednesday’s visit by Florida Department of Agriculture inspectors Francis Odio and Wenndy Ayerdis, “A live roach crawled across the floor near the seafood area and ran beneath a refrigerated bunker housing prepackaged food items.”

That roach brought consequences.

“The affected storage areas shall be completely cleared of all merchandise, cleaned and sanitized by the next inspection,” the inspection said. “No other merchandise may be added to the storage area, or a Broken Stop-Use will be issued.

“If evidence of pest infestation is observed on the next inspection, a Stop-Use Order will be issued on all receiving areas of the establishment and the establishment will no longer be allowed to receive additional food items,” the inspection continued. “A Stop-Use Order of all processing equipment will be issued and a Stop Sale Order of all exposed food items will be issued until the infestation is eradicated.”

The inspectors dropped Stop Sale orders on tres leches, flan and flan de queso in the bakery reach-in cooler for being 43 and 44 degrees, while proper food safety dictates they be at or under 41 degrees. Also, getting slammed with Stop Sales for the same reason were prepackaged sliced ham, sliced cooked ham and sliced turkey.
