Iman Shumpert hilariously described what would happen if Kevin Durant put on a wig and played in the WNBA: “Juwanna Mann?”

Kevin Durant has been a walking mismatch for the entirety of his NBA career. He was a 6’10” shooting guard at 19, and nearly two decades later, he’s still essentially a 7-footer who shoots and moves like one. Nobody, in that time frame, figured out what to do with the dude.

Now, imagine putting the Slim Reaper in the WNBA. That’s essentially the ridiculous hypothetical Iman Shumpert was presented with. And, like the joke that it was, the 2016 NBA champion couldn’t help but laugh at the thought.

However, Shump also played along. Once he started picturing how that scenario would play out, he had a pretty entertaining description of what would be waiting for KD.

Kevin Durant, Juwanna Mann?

The idea of men competing in women’s sports has been a hot and touchy topic lately. Sophie Cunningham voiced her opinion on the subject and stirred up a hornet’s nest in doing so.

And then, in the middle of the chaos, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White entered the fray. The former NBA first-round picks said they wanted to join the WNBA as women for the sake of basketball. Of course, Freedom and White were simply looking to back the WNBA into a corner regarding their stance and definition of what a woman is.

The Durant hypothetical thrown at Shumpert had nothing to do with “inclusion” or anything, but it’s interesting nonetheless. That conversation with DJ Vlad came four years earlier, long before the subject was as contentious as it is today.

Back then, the scenario was conceived in the name of fun. No larger statement was being made and no point was being proved about who should be allowed to play where. It’s just a ridiculous hypothetical taken to an extreme. Naturally, it also deserves a hilariously ridiculous retort.

“Juwanna Mann?” Shumpert

“Man, make the movie. Kevin Durant, Juwanna Man Part 2. Make the movie and it will show you exactly what could happen. Boy! Oh, party time. And y’all give him a little rock, so he can shoot it from Arkansas?… It’s gonna be crazy.”

For context, Juwanna Mann is a 2002 comedy movie. The plot is just as absurd as the notion of Durant playing in the WNBA.

In the film, Jamal Jeffries (played by Miguel A. Nuñez Jr.) is a banned NBA star who decides to join the women’s league to keep playing basketball. He dresses up in a wig and makeup and as expected, completely dominates the female competition.

Now, replace Jeffries with Durant and Shump’s reaction starts to make a lot of sense. KD is already an unstoppable force in the NBA, so what do you think would happen if a bunch of women at least half a foot shorter than he is tried to guard one of basketball’s greatest scorers?

Just the thought of it should be illegal.

Some hypotheticals are better left hypothetical

There is no reason to dissect the scenario beyond what Shumpert already described. Besides the little Rock, Arkansas pun, there was nothing funny about the idea of a 16-time All-Star and a future First Ballot Hall of Famer playing against women.

That’s why the joke aged so well.

What Shumpert and DJ Vlad could treat as an obviously absurd basketball scenario, said in jest, has since become part of a much more serious conversation. They weren’t trying to settle any of those questions, but boy, did they accidentally stumble into one.
