Carolina Panthers Need Their Quarterback to Prove Week 1 Wasn’t a One-Off

The Carolina Panthers need quarterback Bryce Young to turn an encouraging opener into a trend Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Young threw for 361 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the Week 1 loss to Chicago, but the Panthers cannot afford for that production to become another isolated spike as they try to avoid a fifth straight 0-2 start.

Locked On Panthers host Julian Council identified Young’s week-to-week consistency as Carolina’s most important key in Atlanta. Council pointed to Young’s recent success in that building and argued that another strong performance would give the offense its best chance to capitalize on a Falcons team facing uncertainty at quarterback.

Young’s Week 1 line provided tangible evidence that the passing game can carry more weight this season. He completed 23 of 37 passes and added a rushing touchdown, but his interception before halftime also fed into a collection of mistakes that kept the offense from overcoming Chicago’s 59 points.

The matchup should give Young opportunities to build on that start. Council expects Atlanta to account more aggressively for Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker (ankle) after his Week 1 production, which could create more room for wide receivers Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette. The offense does not need Young to duplicate every yard from the opener; it needs him to protect possessions, sustain the efficiency he showed against Chicago, and finish drives.

That matters because Carolina’s defense enters the game needing a fast correction after allowing 291 rushing yards in Week 1. Council’s prescription was straightforward: Make Atlanta’s quarterback beat the Panthers through the air rather than allowing Bijan Robinson to control the game. If that happens, Young and the passing game could decide whether the club leaves Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 1-1 instead of facing another early-season hole.

A win would also give Carolina its first NFC South victory and change the tenor of the opening month. Young has already shown he can produce against Atlanta; Sunday offers the more consequential test of whether the Panthers can rely on that level from one week to the next.

Panthers News and Notes

– Coker was limited Wednesday and Thursday in practice with an ankle issue, and Council noted that wide receiver John Metchie III worked in Coker’s offensive spot during practice. Coker was a full participant during Friday’s practice and has been removed from the injury report. The official depth chart lists Metchie behind Legette, but his practice usage bears watching if Coker is limited Sunday.

– Panthers defensive tackle Bobby Brown III (back) has been ruled out against Atlanta, while outside linebacker Patrick Jones II (back) is a game-time decision. Those availability questions raise the difficulty of containing Robinson after Carolina’s run defense struggled in the opener.

– The Panthers waived wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. this week after promoting linebacker Tyrel Dodson from the practice squad. Horn subsequently joined the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, leaving Carolina with a changed return-game and receiver-depth picture.
