Marcelo Mayer Nearing Giants Debut Following Injury Update

Marcelo Mayer is getting closer to making his San Francisco Giants debut after another encouraging step in his recovery.

Mayer ran the bases for a second consecutive day as he continues working back from a right foot bone bruise and a left forearm stress reaction. The latest update was reported by Giants beat writer Justice delos Santos on X.

The timing could put Mayer in position to join the Giants as soon as Monday, Sept. 21, when San Francisco begins a series against the Minnesota Twins at Oracle Park.

With Triple-A Sacramento finishing its season this weekend, Mayer could potentially make his Giants debut without going on a minor league rehab assignment. The Giants will still need to determine whether he is ready for game action before making that move.

Mayer has yet to appear for San Francisco since joining the organization in a midseason trade with the Boston Red Sox. The Giants acquired the 23-year-old infielder in exchange for left-handed reliever Erik Miller and minor league outfielder Carlos Gutierrez.

Before his injury, Mayer appeared in 70 games for Boston this season. He hit .220/.282/.312 with 45 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs, 22 RBI and three stolen bases in 205 at-bats.

Mayer also appeared in 44 games for the Red Sox during the 2025 season. Across his first 114 major league games, he has a .223 batting average with seven home runs and 32 RBI.

His arrival in San Francisco has been delayed by multiple setbacks. A left forearm stress reaction was followed by a right foot bone bruise, which interrupted his progress while he was working toward a return.

Now, Mayer is once again running the bases and appears to be nearing the final stage of his recovery. If his progress continues, the Giants could finally get a look at their recent infield addition before the 2026 season ends.
