Daniel Jones, Colts Dealt Bad News Before Chiefs Game

Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts have a difficult test waiting for them Sunday night when they travel to Arrowhead Stadium to face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Indianapolis is looking to rebound from a 41-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, while Kansas City opened its season with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Colts will need their offense to find more consistency against a Chiefs defense that will put pressure on Jones and the passing game.

Keenan Allen remains an important part of that group. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver made his regular-season debut with Indianapolis against Baltimore after signing with the team in August. Allen led the Colts with six receptions in the opener, although those catches produced only 32 yards.

Indianapolis was dealt some unwanted news involving Allen, and it could affect the Colts beyond Sunday’s game.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that Allen is facing a minimum three-game suspension stemming from his August 30 arrest for an alleged drunk-driving incident in downtown Indianapolis.

Allen was formally charged Wednesday with two misdemeanors: operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or higher and operating while intoxicated. Court records show his blood-alcohol level was 0.224. He was arrested after Indianapolis police found him parked in a no-parking zone and reported signs of intoxication. Allen later posted a $500 cash bond, while an attorney conference is scheduled for Oct. 26.

The potential suspension would become an additional problem for an Indianapolis offense that already needs to improve after its Week 1 performance. Allen played a chunk of the Colts’ offensive snaps against Baltimore and immediately became one of Jones’ primary targets. His six catches accounted for 31.6% of Jones’ completions, giving the veteran receiver a substantial role despite his limited yardage.

The Colts currently have Allen listed on their Week 2 depth chart, and he practiced fully throughout the week. He is not listed on the official injury report for Sunday’s game, meaning the legal situation has not prevented him from playing against Kansas City. Ashton Dulin, however, has already been ruled out with an ankle injury, leaving Indianapolis with less depth at receiver.

Allen remains available against the Chiefs as of this writing. But it remains to be seen when the NFL decides to enact his discipline following the legal proceedings.
