Todd McShay Mock Draft: Jacarrius Peak Gives the 49ers a Piece on the Offensive Line

The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive line, which has long had some question marks, performed rather well in their 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams last Thursday. Quarterback Brock Purdy had plenty of time and room to do his thing, and that resulted in him completing 25 of 34 passing attempts and throwing three touchdown passes while not getting sacked even once.

But there are still some concerns about the interior of San Francisco’s offensive line. If nothing else, Trent Williams, its future Hall of Fame left tackle, is 38 years of age, and while he’s still a bona fide star, no one knows how much longer he will continue to play at his current level.

The franchise has infamously not prioritized taking offensive linemen early in the NFL draft. But Todd McShay of The Ringer has the Niners going with an offensive tackle in the first round in his latest 2027 NFL mock draft.

Enter Jacarrius Peak

Jacarrius Peak redshirted as a true freshman in 2022, and he’s starting his fifth year in the NCAA at the University of South Carolina after transferring from North Carolina State University. In 2023 and 2024, he played mostly at the right tackle position, but since then, he has been a left tackle.

At 6-foot-4 and roughly 300 pounds, he lacks the ideal bulk to be a top-flight offensive tackle in the NFL. But he is mobile, quick and athletic, and he shines in pass protection.

“Peak is an athletic tackle with the quickness and range to excel in the Niners’ zone-running scheme,” McShay wrote. “He’s smooth climbing to linebackers, reacts well to pressure looks, and has enough agility to mirror on the edge. His technique and play strength need refinement, but the tools are there for him to grow into an NFL starter at either tackle spot.”

For last season (including bowl games), Peak received an 84.1 pass-blocking grade, a 65 run-blocking grade and an overall grade of 73.7 from Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

Many feel it is time for the Niners to find and get the heir apparent to Williams, and McShay feels Peak could fit the bill in that regard.

“With Trent Williams nearing the end of a Hall of Fame career, Peak would give San Francisco a developmental successor whose athletic profile fits Kyle Shanahan’s offense.”

Peak sustained a left knee injury in February while playing basketball, forcing him to sit out spring practices and training camp. He returned to game action in Week 3 versus Mississippi State University and was given an 86.5 pass-blocking grade, a 57.8 run-blocking grade and a 68.3 overall grade from PFF for that contest.
