“Totally out of his character” – Brian Windhorst shuts down fears of Nikola Jokic plotting his exit from Denver

Even in an era when no superstar’s future with a particular franchise feels completely guaranteed, it is difficult to imagine the Denver Nuggets without Nikola Jokic.

The Serbian big man has been the centerpiece of the franchise for years, winning three MVP awards and leading Denver to its first NBA championship. Yet after turning down an extension in each of the past two offseasons, questions about his long-term future have naturally started to emerge.

The three-time MVP had an opportunity to sign a four-year extension worth up to $278 million. Instead, he chose to wait until next summer, when he could become eligible for a historic five-year, $359 million deal.

The Joker is simply about maximizing his future contract, and therefore, waiting makes financial sense. However, by not extending his deal now, Jokic has also left the door open for uncertainty surrounding his future.

Still, NBA analyst Brian Windhorst believes it would be completely out of character for Jokic to take the more dramatic route and eventually force his way out of Denver.

Windy says Jokic doesn’t want out

With no extension signed, Jokic has the ability to opt out of his player option for the 2027-28 season and enter unrestricted free agency if he chooses.

In today’s NBA, that possibility alone is enough to create speculation, particularly when a superstar is in his prime and has continuously witnessed his team struggle to make deep runs in the playoffs.

However, Windy believes Jokic is completely different.

The Nuggets’ big man has always maintained a relatively private lifestyle and has never appeared interested in feeding rumors or creating unnecessary drama around his stature. Thus, according to Windy, that makes the idea of Jokic secretly plotting his exit from Denver difficult to imagine.

“I don’t want to generalize. But if you look at Serbian players, they don’t have a history of plotting to exit in free agency. Those players typically like the teams that they grew up with,” Windy said. “I don’t think Jokic wants to leave. His circle is outrageously small. At the same time, he is one of the smartest guys in the league… it just seems totally out of his character and personality to plot to get out of a situation.”

Put simply, that does not guarantee Jokic will remain in Denver forever, but Windy’s point is that the way the eight-time All-Star has conducted himself throughout his career makes a dramatic trade demand seem unlikely.

Anything could happen

When Jokic decided to wait on his extension, some naturally interpreted the move as a way of putting pressure on the Nuggets.

After three consecutive seasons without reaching the Conference Finals, the Nuggets clearly have a lot of work to put in to be the best team in the Western Conference. Jokic, however, has repeatedly indicated that he wants to be a “Nugget for life.”

However, the Nuggets cannot take things for granted.

Sure, they might have added DeMar DeRozan to strengthen their offseason, but there is no doubt that their roster is far from the most intimidating one in the league. This is where the Nuggets need to show their competitive fire, and they simply cannot afford to fall behind teams like the Timberwolves, Thunder, and Spurs.

Windy may be confident that Jokic is unlikely to suddenly force his way out of Denver, but that should not give them a reason to be complacent.
