NFL Announces Punishment Decision for Cowboys After Cam Skattebo Incident

Cam Skattebo and the New York Giants have begun the 2026 NFL season with a 1-0 record after taking down Dak Prescott and NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys 28-20 in Week 1’s edition of “Sunday Night Football.” Now, the Giants will look to remain perfect in Week 2, traveling to the West Coast to face Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football.”

With 13:31 remaining in the second quarter of Cowboys vs. Giants, New York had the ball on its own 44-yard line, facing a 3rd-and-2 situation. The Giants handed the ball to Skattbo, only for the former Arizona State running back to gain zero yards, forcing a 4th down after Dallas defensive tackle Kenny Clark made the stop.

However, Clark may have grabbed hold of Skattebo’s facemask during the play, which gave the running back a bloody nose. Skattebo didn’t appear happy after the play, especially since the officials did not throw the flag.

While no flag was thrown for Clark’s potential facemask on Skattebo, the NFL still reviewed the play for potential further punishment, as it does for every play throughout the season. And per the NFL rulebook, a play is deemed a facemask when a player is “twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, or controlling the mask or helmet opening.”

In the NFL, players can typically be fined up to $11,941 for a first facemask offense, which can increase to $17,911 upon a second violation. But the NFL deemed Clark’s tackle on Skattebo not enough to receive a fine.

Cowboys running back Javonte Williams was also fined for a taunt before his touchdown against the Giants, while fellow running back Malik Davis, now out for the season, was charged $6,735 for an illegal use of the helmet in the preseason. Overall, three Dallas players were fined after Week 1, while no Giants players were.

After the Rams matchup, Skattebo and the Giants will return home to host the Tennessee Titans in Week 3.
