Wrong-way driver dies, 3 injured in I-95 crash at Fuller Warren Bridge

The Florida Highway Patrol said an elderly Jacksonville man driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 died after a crash that also injured three other people near the Fuller Warren Bridge.

The three-vehicle collision happened on I-95 Southbound near Park Avenue at the Fuller Warren Bridge about 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

The Highway Patrol reported that the 75-year-old man was driving a van northbound in the southbound lane. The van sideswiped a sport utility vehicle traveling southbound, driven by a 26-year-old Jacksonville woman. The SUV came to a controlled stop.

The van continued forward, traveling the wrong way. It then collided with the front of a southbound sedan being driven by a 27-year-old Tampa woman with a 49-year-old male passenger. The van and sedan came to rest in the middle lane, according to the FHP.

The agency said the van driver died after being taken to UF Health Jacksonville.

The sedan driver had serious injuries, and her passenger was in critical condition when they were taken to the hospital. The FHP said the SUV driver’s injuries were minor.

The Highway Patrol said all had been wearing seat belts.

The crash closed three southbound lanes of I-95 on the Fuller Warren Bridge for several hours, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
