Hurricanes running back carted off, standout defender briefly leaves Wake Forest game

The No. 5 Miami Hurricanes came away with a sigh of relief on what looked like their first major injury of Friday night’s game at the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The second? They might not be so lucky.

Fifth-year senior defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. returned to the field after a brief trip to the locker room following an apparent left shoulder injury.

Not long after Moten’s return, however, running back CharMar “Marty” Brown went down following a 32-yard run midway through the second quarter with what appeared to be a knee injury. A cart came down the length of the field for Brown, who was helped off the sideline and put no weight on his right leg. He eventually did get taken to the locker room on a cart.

Brown is a key member of Miami’s deep running back room, which also features Mark Fletcher Jr., Girard Pringle Jr., Javian Mallory and Jordan Lyle (the latter of whom has not yet played in a game this season). A North Dakota State transfer, Brown ran for 474 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He had 97 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries this season at the time of the injury.

As for Moten, the fifth-year senior defensive tackle went down with an apparent shoulder injury two plays into UM’s first defensive drive at Allegacy Financial Stadium.

Moten exited with trainers on either side of him as he went toward the locker room.

Fortunately for the Hurricanes, Moten missed minimal time. He made it back to the field one drive later.

The defensive tackle is one of Miami’s top players this season. He was a preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and is viewed as a potential late first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Keona Davis, a Nebraska transfer, took Moten’s spot at defensive tackle alongside Justin Scott.
